Herbal Remedies

Herbal remedies have been used by cultures around the world for centuries and are now available in a variety of forms such as tinctures, tablets, fluid extracts, loose herbs and herb teas. A health store will offer the widest selection.

Herbal remedies can play a significant part in the prevention and treatment of many conditions, both chronic and acute and offer a mild form of treatment with very beneficial effects.

Many Herbal remedies can work as fast as any modern synthetic drug to bring relief for minor ailments, but in the treatment of chronic disorders such as rheumatism or bronchitis, the action of Herbal remedies is slow, gentle and cumulative. Herbal remedies work to strengthen and stimulate the various systems of the body over a long period of time.

Before making the transition from drug remedies to Herbal remedies , consult your health care practitioner, as many drugs cause unpleasant side effects when combined with other substances including Herbal remedies. The body can become hooked on many drugs including painkillers and tranquillisers If you are not taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, Herbal remedies will provide safe, effective health care.

How long should you go on taking herbal remedies? Most herbal remedies are fairly mild, and can be safely taken over a long period without risk, in the doses suggested by the herbal remedy supplier. However, herbal remedies should not be seen as a substitute for the efficient working of your body's own natural defence system. The best herbal remedies in the world cannot do much in the long term for somebody who is undermining his or her health by inadequate diet, too little exercise and excessive stress. Once you feel that the condition for which you are taking a herbal remedy is much improved, you should try tapering off the dose gradually.

At Country Living health Store you will find herbal remedies from manufacturers who use only the finest ingredients to produce premium quality supplements. Some of the most commonly sold herbal remedies are:

  • Agnus Castus: mainly used for gynaecological disorders such as menstrual problems and infertility. Also, due to its hormonal link, it may maintain a healthy menopause.

The best way to stay healthy in old age is to prevent disease before it starts. Remember that it is in wholesome Natural Health Products such as fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses that vitamins, minerals and trace elements are found and not in processed or pre-packaged goods

Health food store shelves are full of Natural Health Products to help us live a long and active life.

Here you will find organic flour, pasta, beverages, dried fruit, nuts and pulses etc. free from harmful pesticides and additives.

At certain times we may want to increase our consumption of foods high in particular vitamins. For example, an increase in health food products containing vitamin B such as whole grains, leafy green vegetables, eggs, milk and yeast extract could help if we are under stress. If we feel our immune system is compromised then we should increase levels of vitamin C rich foods. Many fruits contain high levels of vitamin C including citrus fruits and kiwi fruit. Vegetables, including peppers also contain high levels of vitamin C. Eating health food products rich in vitamin C can also help those of us who bruise easily, are slow to heal and suffer from excessive tiredness.

There will be times however when we cannot obtain sufficient vitamins through food alone. We can then turn to the vast array of supplements available from health food stores. These natural health supplements can help us obtain higher levels of vitamins, minerals and trace elements which can be very beneficial during times of illness for example.

Natural Health Products from Quest Vitaminsare manufactured using only the finest ingredients. All products are free from artificial preservatives, colours, flavours, sucrose, lactose and yeast. All QuestNatural Health Products are also free from hydrogenated fats which have been linked with an increased risk of heart disease. Natural Health Products from manufacturers such as Solgar, Bio-Health, A.Vogel, Nature's Plus and Nature's Aid are also produced using only top quality ingredients.

Natural Health Supplements

Food supplements usually come in the form of capsules, tablets, liquids, powders or ampules, but there are a number of recognized all-natural foods that have a highly beneficial healing effect on the body and can be considered as a natural health supplements. These natural health supplements act as nutritional powerhouses in helping to build resistance to the ravages of illness.

Fish Oil

Fish Oil has emerged as one of the best natural health supplements for boosting overall health. In the last 30 years research has focused on a family of essential fatty acids (EFAs), fats that your body needs daily but can't make itself, called omega-3s. The healthiest of all dietary fats, omega-3s have been shown to ease joint pain, protect the heart, sharpen memory, and improve mood. In fish oil there are two Omega-3s at work: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Today's fast and processed foods have nearly squeezed Omega-3s out of the diet and therefore taking fish oil as a natural health supplements will ensure an adequate supply of these important nutrients. If you are a strict vegetarian, taking Omega-3 in fish oil is not an option, but there are choices. Flaxseed oil is the most common vegetarian source of Omega-3s.

Garlic

Garlic, long considered a natural health supplement for the cardiovascular system, is a prime concentrated source of many nutrients, partly due to its high sulphur content. Garlic is a natural health supplements that has been used all over the world to treat coughs, toothaches, earaches, fungal infections and poor circulation. Before the advent of antibiotics, garlic was widely used to combat infections.

Lecithin

Lecithin is a natural health supplement usually taken from defatted soya beans, whose chief power is in being a phospholipids; that is, melting away body fat and keeping cholesterol in check.

Spirulina

Spirulina Blue Green Algae: Spirulina is a naturally occurring food which consists of at least 60% vegetable protein. It also contains the most extraordinary concentration of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and nutrients. It contains more functional nutrients than in any other plant, grain, food or herb known to man. Rich in chlorophyll (a pigment found in green plants which absorbs light and converts into energy), this naturally occurring plant could be considered as the building block for life itself. Spirulina also contains:

  • Enzymes - Which play a crucial role in metabolic function and therefore energy levels.
  • Numerous vitamins - Particularly B12, often lacking in strict vegetarian and vegan diets.
  • Beta carotene - The content is 10 times greater than found in carrots.
  • Minerals - Such as iron and magnesium which can be easily taken into the cells of the body after digestion and absorption.
  • Essential Fatty Acids - Such as Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA).

Propolis

Propolis a truly remarkable natural health supplement: Propolis is a sap-like substance, gathered by bees from the leaf buds or bark of trees, especially poplars. Bees use propolis to seal up holes in the hive and is referred to as "bee glue". Scientists the world over have found that this same propolis taken as a natural health supplements, has powerful antibiotic activities. It is available as a tablet, capsule, cream or liquid, and also in cough syrups and chest rubs. It is the all - natural health supplements from the beehive

All of the above natural health supplements can be purchased from Country Living Health Store or from our online shop healthstore.uk.com.

Alternative Health Supplement

Today more people than ever are taking alternative health supplements. Numerous studies have demonstrated that most people consume a diet inadequate in nutritional value and that an alternative health supplements makes them feel healthier.

Dealing with hazards of modern living may be another reason why many people take an alternative health supplements. Environmental and lifestyle factors can destroy vitamins and minerals. For example, it is known that smokers require at least twice as much vitamin C as do non smokers. Smokers should therefore consider an alternative health supplements . We should also consider the effect of alcohol consumption, food additives, heavy metals, carbon monoxide, and other chemicals associated with our modern society that are known to interfere with nutrient function.

The very term, alternative health supplements, denotes that the beneficial compounds are supplementary measures to good health. A person cannot make up for poor dietary habits, a negative attitude, and a lack of exercise by taking pills whether the pills are drugs or alternative health supplements.

The need for alternative health supplements is being confirmed and validated by scientists the world over. Just as our foods lose their vitality and spark of life, so do our bodies slowly wither on the vine. Aging is no longer the bane of the over-fifty group. It is to be seen in youngsters who may have a calendar age of eighteen but have various problems that were formerly confined to the elderly.

Health stores are committed to your well-being and supply a range of quality foods and alternative health supplements to help you live a long and healthy life. In addition to essential nutrients (e.g. vitamins and minerals) there are a number of food components and natural physiological agents that have demonstrated impressive health-promoting effects when taken as alternative health supplements. These include flavonoids (e.g. quercetin, rutin, green tea), probiotics and coenzyme Q10. These alternative health supplements exert significant therapeutic effects with little, if any toxicity. These alternative health supplements can play a major role in preventing illness.

At Country Living we have health supplements from all of the major manufacturers and our staff are always willing to help and advise on the best health supplement for your needs.

Health Food Supplement

Today more people than ever are taking a health food supplements. The idea that a well-balanced diet is essential for a healthy body is nothing new. But despite the knowledge that proper nutrition can help us experience good health, few of us put this theory fully into practice. For instance, experts agree that we need at least five good portions of fruit and vegetables a day to provide vital vitamins and minerals. However, the vast majority of us eat less than half this amount. As a nation we've become much more reliant on processed 'convenience' foods, which can lose essential nutrients along the way.

Much of our food today has been robbed of its natural elements until it is perhaps 'taste-tempting' but otherwise undesirable in terms of holistic health. This lifeless, polluted food drenches your body with chemicals that serve to hasten the onset of many ailments. Because of this nutrient loss resulting from chemical farming and processing, there is a pressing need to obtain essential elements from good food sources and from health food supplement . The need for health food supplement is being confirmed and validated by scientists the world over.

It is also worth remembering that those of us who put our bodies through more physical and mental demands than average may benefit from not only ensuring that our diet consists predominately of health foods, but also to add a daily health food supplement into their diet as a precautionary measure. After all prevention is better than cure. At certain times, e.g. during or after illness, we may have an extra need for nutrients over and above the supply normally available from our diet. Multivitamin and mineral supplements can help to meet this extra need. Even a good, 'balanced diet' cannot always supply all the vitamins and minerals we require when we have special needs.

Many groups of people are known to have extra requirements for vitamins and minerals and will therefore benefit from a health food supplement.

  • Those on restricted diets, e.g. coeliacs, diabetics, vegans food allergy suffers etc.
  • People with poor appetites, e.g. the elderly and the infirm
  • People with digestive disorders
  • Slimmers (reduced calorie intake leads to poorer nutrient levels)
  • Smokers and drinkers (extra need of antioxidants, in particular)
  • Athletes and very active people

Here at Country Living we are committed to your well-being and supply a range of quality foods and health food supplement to help you live a long and healthy life. We supply health supplements which may help to boost your body's defences against infections and other minor illnesses, especially in the winter, health supplements to help with digestive problems (probiotics, digestive enzymes etc), health supplements to help when hair, skin or nails are in poor condition and health supplements to help with joints, bones and muscles.

Bach Flower Remedies

Dr Edward Bach was a physician and a homeopath that developed a complete system of 38 flower remedies, each one of these Bach Flower Remedies has been prepared from flowers of wild plants, trees or bushes.

The Bach Flower Remedies are designed to support a patient's fight against illness, by addressing emotional factors such as; depression, anxiety and trauma. The Bach Flower remedies can also be used in a preventative way, when we are experiencing stress and anxiety, and for those who generally feel tired or unwell but do not have a specific medical diagnosis.

If needed they may be taken in conjunction with medical treatments as they will not conflict with any medication, have no side effects and are non addictive. (We would however always advise you to inform your GP/Consultant that you are taking alternative medicine if you are receiving medical treatment).

Rescue Remedy is the Bach Flower remedy to choose in emergency situations, for example; receiving sudden bad news, bereavement, feeling fearful or when in terror. Rescue Remedy may also be taken for a stressful event, such as; a visit to the dentist, sitting an exam, taking your driving test etc, Rescue remedy will help to calm your fear and nerves. At Country Living we regularly suggest this to our High School members of staff whilst taking their exams.

Each one of the 38 Bach Flower remedies is used for a different emotional state and it is important to choose the correct one for your situation to ensure it works for you.

Several simple books and leaflets are available to help you choose your Bach Flower Remedies. The 38 Flower Remedies details each remedy and how it can help with emotional problems.

In addition to the Bach Flower Remedies, there is Rescue Cream which is very useful as a healing ointment for dry and chapped skin. Rescue remedy is also now available in a convenient spay form. New to the Bach Flower Remedies range are Rescue Pastilles.

Womens Health

Women have clearly defined nutritional needs that change as they age and pass through various cycles. Women’s health can suffer through following low-calorie or “fad” diets to lose weight and because of the stress of trying to juggle, in many cases, a family, a job, and a home. Women can become deficient in a number of vitamins and minerals during this time and would be well advised to add a health supplement to their diet.

Women who take the contraceptive pill will require different supplements than women who are experiencing the menopause. Breast-feeding and pregnant women both have massive nutritional requirements, and menstruating women are different again.

Women’s Health - Menstrual Problems

  • Vitamin B6 and Magnesium can help with period pains in womens health. Try Magnesium OK by Wassen.which contains these two nutrients. This one-a-day supplement can also help with PMT.
  • Evening primrose oil and fish oil, can reduce womens health period problems, including heavy periods and cramping.
  • Agnus castus will help to balance the hormones. Try it in tincture form (A.Vogel).
  • Iron (5mg daily – more if you tend to lose a lot of blood) and zinc (15mg) will help in cases of heavy menstrual periods.

Women’s Health – Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome relates to a whole host of physical and emotional symptoms that occur between ovulation and menstruation. Physical symptoms include fluid retention, tender breasts, poor skin, and headaches. Women may also become weepy and depressed. PMS is believed to be primarily caused by a hormonal imbalance in the body.

  • Evening primrose oil has been very effective in alleviating premenstrual breast tenderness, edema, and eczema. Take three to four 1gm capsules per day for at least four months.
  • Vitamin B complex will help with nervous tension and should be taken at 50 to 100mg per day.
  • Magnesium will help with insomnia and palpitations.
  • Chromium may help with symptoms related to blood sugar.
  • Agnus Castus for womens health will help to balance hormones.

Women’s Health – Pregnancy

Common complaints during this period of time include anemia, constipation, cramps, varicose veins, vaginal thrush, stretchmarks, and nausea and vomiting

  • Insure that you get plenty of iron (see your physician for dosages), to prevent and treat anaemia. Take vitamin C(500mg per day) with iron to aid absorption.
  • Folic acid (400mcgg per day) is necessary during pregnancy for the healthy development of the foetus.
  • An increase in dietary fibre will help to prevent constipation.
  • Eat plenty of foods rich in calcium to prevent cramp.
  • Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are vital for growth and development of the baby, particularly for the brain and nervous system. Adequate intakes of EFA’s in the newborn appear to influence vision and intelligence.
  • Vitamins C and E and bioflavonoids, zinc, and brewer’s yeast will help to heal damaged blood vessels causing varicose veins.
  • Insure you have plenty of vitamins EC, zinc, silica, and pantothenic acid, which can help to prevent stretchmarks. Vitamin E oil can be applied neat to areas that are likely to become stretched, including the abdomen and perineum.

Womens Health – The Menopause

The menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years and may be accompanied by many uncomfortable emotional and physical symptoms. These include hot flushes, headaches, heavy periods, irritability and mood swings and pain during intercourse, mostly as a result of vaginal dryness. Hormonal changes (a decrease in oestrogen and prostesterone) in the body are the cause of most of these complaints.

  • Agnus Castus herb (about 25 drops of tincture, three times daily) will balance the hormones and help to relieve the womens health symptoms of the menopause.
  • Take magnesium (Magnesium Citrate or Chelate) and vitamin B complex for anxiety and irritability associated with womens health in menopause.
  • Linseed oil, Evening Primrose, Vitamin B-complex (50mg daily), and Zinc (15mg daily) can be taken for skin problems

Homeopathic remedies

There are many homeopathic remedies available from both practitioners and health food shops, which can be used to treat most minor illnesses and conditions.

Homeopathic remedies do not have side effects and are safe, even for the use of small children, this therefore makes them suitable for self medication, when treating common complaints that any one of the family may suffer from.

The basic idea of homeopathy is to treat an illness or complaint with a substance which, if taken by a healthy person, would actually produce symptoms similar to those of the person who is ill.

For example: Belladonna Deadly Nightshade. When eaten, this plant, root or berries is extremely toxic and can cause symptoms such as; flushing, loss of balance and urinary retention. The homeopathic form of Belladonna is used to treat conditions such as; a brightly flushed face, vertigo and cystitis.

Homeopathic remedies can be purchased from Country Living Health Store or online at healthstore.uk.com, They are available in several potencies 6c and 30c, being the most popular. The principles of homeopathic remedies mean that the more dilute a remedy becomes -30c is more dilute than 6c- the more potent it becomes. However at these potencies choosing the right remedy is more important than choosing the right potency. As a general rule 6c are used for acute, long standing ailments, and 30c for emergencies or chronic conditions. Some of the most popular homoeopathic remedies at Country Living are:

Herbal Cigarettes

Herbal cigarettes have been available for over 30 years and have helped many thousands of smokers give up. Herbal cigarettes are tobacco free and nicotine free and contain no addictive ingredients so there is no risk of developing a long-term dependency on herbal cigarettes.

Habitual long-term smokers may find herbal cigarettes a useful substitute alongside nicotine therapy. Herbal cigarettes allow smokers to wean themselves off the oral habit and inhalation gradually.

If you want to stop smoking, herbal cigarettes can help you. The form in which the herbal cigarettes are supplied i.e. filter tipped cigarettes, makes it possible to stop by stages, which is psychologically less demanding than stopping dead. With herbal cigarettes, you do away with the tobacco but you still allow yourself to go through the motions.

NTB is a brand of herbal cigarette that contains no nicotine; therefore you free yourself from the physical need. However, that does not mean you can smoke as many herbal cigarettes as you like, as you also have to reduce your ‘psychological need’ of cigarettes.

Honeyrose is another popular brand of herbal cigarettes. Honeyrose herbal cigarettes and smoking mixtures are a reassuring way to stop smoking completely. The Honeyrose Stop Smoking Plan will help you to replace tobacco cigarettes gradually and calmly, substituting Honeyrose Herbal Cigarettes for tobacco cigarettes until you finally quit smoking. You have the added comfort of knowing that all the ingredients in the Honeyrose Herbal Cigarettes are non-additive, pure herbs specially treated and naturally flavoured without added chemicals.

Each time you smoke Honeyrose Herbal Cigarettes you lessen your intake of nicotine, and the next tobacco cigarette will seem less attractive.

Honeyrose Special herbal cigarettes are made from a specially selected blend of herbs including Marshmallow, Red Clover and Rose and have a special light taste.

Honeyrose Special herbal cigarettes are guaranteed tobacco and nicotine free with a tar level of 5mg.

Honeyrose Ginseng herbal cigarettes bring a taste of the Orient to the original blend of Marshmallow, Red clover and Rose. Honeyrose Ginseng herbal cigarettes are guaranteed tobacco and nicotine free.

Honeyrose Menthol herbal cigarettes are guaranteed tobacco and nicotine free with a tar level of 6mg. Honeyrose Menthol herbal cigarettes combine the coolness of menthol with a special light taste.

Giving up smoking in stages is psychologically less demanding than abruptly giving up smoking. Herbal cigarettes allow you to go through the motions of smoking i.e. the hand to mouth action, without the harmful effects of tobacco inhalation.

120,000 British smokers die every year because of their habit, with smoking causing a third of all cancer deaths. Herbal cigarettes are a reassuring way to stop smoking completely.

Sprouting Seeds

To keep your body fit and active you need to eat foods that contain sufficient quantities of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of such nutrients. However, we all know how difficult it can be to eat enough of these on a daily basis. This is where sprouting seeds come to the rescue. Sprouted seeds are an excellent source of nutrients.

Grow your own sprouts from sprouting seeds for a supply of fresh, nutritious food. Including sprouted seeds in your daily diet will increase your intake of fabulous nutrients:

  • Sprouts are very young plants, one stage up from a seed.
  • A seed is a storehouse of energy containing all the nutrients needed for a plant to grow.
  • When a seed starts to sprout the nutrients contained in it become available in a living form which is a great form to get them in.

What are the best Sprouting Seeds?

Almost any seed, grain, bean etc. Most of us have eaten beansprouts (sprouted mung beans) in a Chinese meal.

Some things are easier to sprout than others e.g. Alfalfa, lentils, mung beans and radish. Dont try sprouting kidney beans as they are toxic when raw.

A. Vogel produces an excellent range of sprouting seeds called Biosnacky. These sprouting seeds are GM free, non-irradiated and organic and these seeds have the best chance of germinating. Although it is possible to sprout your sprouting seeds in a jam jar, the Biosnacky Germinator Jar or three tiered Germinator will produce the best results.

It just couldnt be easier. Just soak, rinse and watch them grow.

How to enjoy your sprouting seeds:

Once your seeds have sprouted, you can enjoy them in any of the following ways: Place in a bowl on their own or with a dressing of your choice. Makes an ideal side dish. Sprinkle on top of or mix into a salad.

  • Add to sandwich fillings
  • Add to a stir fry just before serving
  • Sprinkle on top of soups or stews before serving.

Sprouted seeds are a healthy and nutritious convenience food you don't need to cook them. Biosnacky sprouting seeds and sprouting seed germinators are available from Country Living Health Store.

Health supplements

Nutrition experts agree that both diet and lifestyle can influence health and well being. It is important that the diet contains the correct amount of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to match each individual's need. For those who do not achieve this for any reason, or for groups who are at particular risk of dietary deficiency, taking health supplements may be a valuable addition to the lifestyle.

"Health Supplement" used to mean a standard vitamin and mineral product that people took to give their diets a boost. Today, health stores and pharmacy shelves sag under the weight of amino acids, natural hormones and antioxidants, to name just a few.

For a long time doctors dismissed the claims of Health Supplement makers, but today even the most old fashioned doctors have realised that some health supplements have earned their place alongside conventional drugs.

Here at Country Living you will find an extensive range of quality health supplements to suit all ages and to help a variety of health concerns.

Glucosamine is a good example of a Health Supplement that was initially dismissed by the medical profession, but studies over the last 15 years have shown that it does in fact help the body to repair damaged cartilage. Country Living offer a wide range of Glucosamine Supplements in a variety of strengths, available as either capsules, tablets, liquids or powder. Check out our regular special offers on these supplements, which include buy one get one free.

Green Food health supplements in particular have become very popular because of their high nutrient composition and their rich chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is the substance that makes plants green, but in the body, it detoxifies, deodorizes and soothes inflammation. Chlorophyll also builds blood supply, activates enzymes and renews tissue. Green food health supplements include spirulina, a blue green algae, wheat grass powder and barley grass powder.

When buying health supplements, buy reputable brands. Some health supplements may contain little or even none of the listed active ingredients. Established manufacturers have their reputations to protect so will try to ensure that their products contain what is stated on the label. Never exceed the recommended doses of your health supplements and always be sure to read labels and package inserts. The same applies, of course, to over-the-counter medications.

At Country Living, our staff are always on hand to help and advise and we regularly have nutrition experts in-store to answer your queries and concerns.

Arnica Tablets

Used to treat bruising, muscular strains, wounds and swelling, Arnica is one of the most popular homeopathic remedies in Britain. Arnica tablets are currently the top selling Homoeopathic remedy at Country Living Health Store and healthstore.uk.com.

Derived from the European plant, Arnica Montana, the little white Arnica tablets - containing Arnica solution watered down hundreds of times to form a homeopathic 'ultra-dilution' - are one of the few 'alternative' medicines to have found their way on to most people's bathroom shelves.

Proponents claim Arnica tablets can reduce swelling dramatically, prevent muscular soreness and alleviate postoperative trauma.

Based on the theory that 'like cures like' homeopathy has always been controversial - it treats illness by giving patients substances that cause the very same symptoms. However, the remedies are given in minute amounts and are often so diluted that there is little or no active ingredient in them.

Yet the fact remains that thousands of practitioners and patients swear by the remarkable curative powers of Arnica tablets. Theresa Hale, founder of London's Hale Clinic, a pioneering centre for complementary medicine, has relied on it for years. 'I use it at home all the time for bruises and sprains,' she says. 'I gave arnica tablets to my mother just two weeks ago when she fell over and her leg began to swell - it went back down within three hours.' (Mail on Sunday) Arnica tablets are widely used in Germany and France by medically qualified doctors, and they are also routinely administered in casualty units in hospitals.

Made from a yellow daisy-like flower, the active components of arnica include sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids which are known to reduce inflammation and ease pain. It also contains thymol, an essential oil that fights infection, and carotenoid, a powerful antioxidant. Arnica tablets are believed to work by stimulating the activity of white blood cells and dispersing fluid that accumulates around damaged, swollen joints.

Country Living Health Store and www.healthstore.uk.com have arnica tablets by the manufacturers Weleda and Nelsons. The Arnica tablets are available in the 6c and 30c potency. In addition to arnica tablets, Arnica cream, gel and lotion is also available for topical use.

Omega 3 fish oils

Omega 3 fish oil is derived from the flesh of fatty fish such as; salmon herring, mackerel, pilchards, sardines and trout. Fish oil is particularly rich in the Omega 3 essential fatty acids EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). These fatty acids are then converted by the body into beneficial prostaglandins.

The prostaglandins then produced from the Omega 3 fish oil are able help the body in ways such as reducing high blood pressure and reducing inflammation.

Many of us choose to eat oily fish as part of a balanced diet; however we may not be able to get enough Omega 3 fish oil purely from our diet. Essential Fatty Acids

Scientists have given essential fats their name because the body must have them to survive, but cannot synthesize them from any other substance we eat so a direct food source is required. Hence the name essential.

There is a popular misconception that all fats are bad and will either make us overweight or will clog our arteries and cause heart attacks. It is true that our diets should not supply more than 30% of our calories as fat but there are certain fats that we do need for good health they are known as Essential Fatty Acids.

Essential Fatty Acids are divided into two categories, Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids. They need to be supplied by the diet as the body cannot manufacture them.

Essential fatty acids are as important in our diet as proteins, vitamin and minerals are. If we obtain insufficient amounts of essential fatty acids in our diets then our cells will deteriorate.

It is estimated that more than 90% of the British public are deficient in essential fatty acids, especially omega 3. Omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids are just two of the fifty or so essential nutrients, which the body cannot make and must get from food.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids stabilize and strengthen cell membranes making them more flexible e.g. in the structure of the brain and cardiovascular system. They attract cholesterol out of the blood and into the cell wall. This action maintains both strength and flexibility enabling the red blood cells to re-shape, allowing delivery of oxygen to the extremities.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids easily become rancid; therefore they are often removed from food during processing to prolong shelf life. Foods which we thought naturally contained essential fatty acids may have actually had them removed. This adds yet another reason to avoid highly processed food.

Todays diet already supplies us with a great deal of Omega-6 due to the increased use of polyunsaturated fats and vegetable oils. A supplement with higher levels of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids will therefore restore the balance.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids flaxseed (linseed) oil, walnuts, green leafy vegetables and in oily fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines and salmon.

Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids can be found in nuts, seeds and their oils such as sunflower oil and olive oil.

Flaxseed oil also provides a source of Omega-9 Fatty Acids. Omega-9 fatty acid is not considered to be essential because it can be manufactured by the body.

At Country Living Health Store, one of the most popular Essential Fatty Acids supplement is Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend.

Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend is carefully formulated to contain a 2:1:1 ratio of Omega 3, 6 & 9 fatty acids, the ideal balance for today's low fat and Omega 3 deficient diets.

  • Help transport cholesterol
  • Help prevent the development of allergies
  • Keep hormone producing glands active
  • Regulate oxygen use, and energy production
  • They are components of nerve cells

herbal tincture

What is a herbal tincture?

A herbal tincture is an alcohol extract of a herb, resulting in a liquid format that is taken orally. Herbal tinctures have been used throughout the centuries by herbalists, as one of the most effective ways of getting a herbal remedy into the body.

Why use alcohol?

Alcohol is used as an extraction agent because it is able to extract both water and fat-soluble substances, which covers all the composite elements within plants.

Why use fresh herbs?

The best herbal tinctures are made using fresh herbs. When a herb is fresh it offers its fullest potency and has not yet lost any of its qualities. As herbs dry out they decay and lose potency. This is most vividly understood by comparing fresh parsley with the dried version. No matter how relatively young your dried parsley is, it will never achieve the fresh taste and piquancy of the original herb, bursting with nutrients and taste.

One of the best known brands of herbal tinctures is A.Vogel. The Swiss naturopath Alfred Vogel believed that a number of basic holistic principles were necessary to ensure the best herbal medicines were produced: fresh herbs, organic cultivation, pure seeds, fresh air, rain, sunshine, holistic standardisation and of course no animal testing. These principles are passionately adhered to today.

Within a very few hours of harvesting, the plants find themselves at the first stage of their journey to becoming a fresh herb tincture. This transformation uses a time-honoured and painstaking processing method.

By using their herbs immediately, they ensure that the active substances present are still at their peak and avoid any need for storage, fumigation or irradiation.

By using alcohol they are able to achieve a well balanced extract, locking in all the beneficial properties present in the freshly harvested herb.

The result of this careful and gentle handling from seed to selection, through organic cultivation, to the use of fresh herbs and the creation of tincture filled with all the active substances, is the world renowned, holistically standardised A.Vogel fresh herb tinctures such as Echinaforce. Echinaforce is the fresh herb tincture of Echinacea purpurea and is used to treat colds, flu and upper respiratory tract infections.

Another excellent range of herbal tinctures are produced by Viridian Nutrition.

Viridian's herbal tinctures are grown, harvested and herbally tinctured using traditional methods in Hertfordshire and the Welsh Boarders to support local organic growers Organic certification by a reputable body such as the Soil Association is your guarantee that you are getting a top quality product and are helping protect the environment. Herbal tinctures in this range include Avena Sativa for relaxation, Californian Poppy for sleep problems (Especially suited to children), Sage herbal tincture for menopausal symptoms, Horse chestnut for varicose veins, Valerian for anxiety and stress, cleavers for lymphatic drainage and feverfew for migraines and headaches.

Tissue salts

Dr Wilhem Schuessler (1821-1898) developed a range of homoeopathic medicines based upon the twelve most common mineral tissue salts found in the human body. These twelve mineral tissue salts are also critical for maintaining good health.

Rather than treating like with like, (as traditional homoeopathic remedies do) mineral tissue salts treat ailments by correcting imbalances or deficiencies in the bodys cell nutrition, helping the body to restore itself to health.

Dr Schuesslers research isolated twelve mineral tissue salts that are vitally important to the day to day functioning of the body.

The Twelve Mineral Tissue Salts

  1. Calcium Fluoride (Calc. Fluor.)
  2. Calcium Phosphate (Calc. Phos.)
  3. Calcium Sulphate (Calc. Sulph.)
  4. Iron Phosphate (Ferr. Phos.)
  5. Potassium Chloride (Kali. Mur.)
  6. Potassium Phosphate (Kali. Phos.)
  7. Potassium Sulphate (Kali. Sulph.)

New Era is a manufacturer that produces a wide range of tissue salts. They produce not only the twelve single tissue salts (as listed above) but a range of combination remedies aimed at treating more varied symptoms and ailments. The combination remedies contain up to five different mineral tissue salts to treat each symptom.

For example New Era produces a combination remedy called H for hayfever and allergic rhinitis. This remedy combines three different tissue salts to help combat symptoms such as sneezing, an itching, runny nose, watery eyes and a tickling throat, as one single tissue salt would not cover all these symptoms.

The combination remedies available are...

Minor skin ailments
Flatulence, colicky pains, indigestion
Nervous and migraine headaches
Backache, lumbago

Zinc supplements

Zinc supplements are regularly taken to support a healthy immune system and are commonly taken to help with skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

The basis of zinc therapy lies in the fact that the mineral is necessary for normal cell division, tissue repair and renewal.

Zinc is also necessary for the metabolism of fatty acids into important substances which help regulate our skin health.

Men have a high concentration of zinc in their prostate gland, and many anecdotal reports indicate that benign enlargement of the prostate gland causing increased frequency of urination in middle aged men can be improved by consuming zinc supplements.

A very severe zinc deficiency leads to stunting and poor sexual development first noted in Egyptian males in the 1950s. Such drastically low levels of zinc are not seen in this country, but some groups, particularly young women between 16 and 24, do often have lower than desirable intakes and could therefore benefit from zinc supplements.

Zinc supplements have also been used as part of treatment programmes for anorexia nervosa victims. Observations have indicated that zinc deficiency could contribute to the anorexic condition by impairing the sense of taste and smell, and therefore the desire to eat.

Clinical studies have also found that zinc supplements (sucked as lozenges) have helped cold symptoms.

Choosing Zinc Supplements

Zinc can be taken as part of a multivitamin and mineral supplement, or separately. Multinutrient formulations contain a wide variety of levels - anything from 1mg-15mg. 5mg-10mg zinc daily is ideal for topping up the dietary level of this mineral, whereas zinc supplements containing 15mg are more likely to be taken for guarding against colds or to help in skin conditions.

Inorganic forms of zinc such as zinc sulphate, carbonate or zinc oxide may not be as well absorbed as organic forms such as zinc gluconate, citrate or zinc chelated with amino acids. Zinc picolinate is closely related to amino acid chelated zinc and may be particularly well absorbed. Check the labels on zinc supplements to see how the zinc appears. Also look for zinc in antioxidant formulations. You would expect to see 10mg-15mg in this type of product.

Zinc lozenges are available, often combined with vitamin C, and are of most use if you actually feel a cold or sore throat coming on. They have a local action, and are usually found is dosages of 3.5mg - 7mg per lozenge.

Buying Tips for Zinc Supplements

If you are buying zinc supplements for long term daily use, choose one that also contains a little copper. Copper is an essential mineral that can be depleted by prolonged zinc intake.

Probiotic Supplements

Within our intestinal tract billions of health-promoting friendly bacteria naturally reside. These friendly bacteria are collectively known as probiotics, meaning for life, and are essential for our digestive health and immune system. If our diet does not provide us with enough probiotics (friendly bacteria) then we may feel the need to take a probiotic supplement. Probiotics maintain digestive health and comfort by digesting particular substances in the diet and enabling efficient nutrient and mineral absorption. A normal healthy gut has a good balance of friendly bacteria over bad bacteria; however, this balance is fragile. Factors such as stress, dietary habits, medication (especially antibiotics) can all have an adverse effect, increasing the need for some of us to take probiotic supplements daily.

There are many different probiotic supplements available, all containing different types of friendly bacteria (probiotics). Country Living Health Store has a wide range of these probiotic supplements.

The most common of these bacteria is L.Acidophilus. This particular strain of bacteria will be found in almost all probiotic supplements.

L.Acidophilus is able to survive the gastric acids and bile salts which are expected at mealtimes, and therefore reaches the intestines where it is needed.

Other beneficial bacteria found in Probiotic Supplements

B.Bifidum supports the production of antibodies, promotes detoxification and maintains resistance to undesirable, bad bacteria. B.Bifidum also supports the intestines to assist transit, promote comfort and optimise a healthy frequency and regularity of bowl movements

FOS (fructooligosaccharides)these are what are known as prebiotics and are found in many probiotic supplements where they act as a food source to bacteria like B.Bifidum. FOSs are non-digestible and therefore make their way safely to the large intestine where they provide food for the probiotics to flourish.

There is a positive relationship between B.Bifidum and prebiotics (FOSs) in the colon, and this has a great impact on supporting intestinal health and wellbeing.

All of these probiotic and prebiotic supplements can be found in powder and capsule form from many Health Food Shops and good online retailers such as healthstore.uk.com the online shop of Country Living Health Store.

Probiotics can also be found in live natural yoghurt, though not in as concentrated form as you would get from taking a probiotic supplement.

Do be aware that getting your daily dose of probiotics from many of the yoghurt drinks on the market is not the best way to achieve a healthy balance of good bacteria. Many of these products contain sugars to make them taste good, which is a key food to bad bacteria. Keep to the capsules or powder forms of probiotic supplements.

When we experience disruptions to the balance of friendly bacteria in our gut it can compromise the digestive and protective roles they play and can lead to poor digestion, lowered natural immunity and conditions such as diarrhoea, constipation, excessive gas, bloating and thrush.

Medical studies show that replenishing the intestines with probiotics is a natural way towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
